Ox racing Tinh Bien

Once a year on the full moon in October, the ox owners of Tinh Bien/Tre Ton districts compete with their counterparts from the border provinces of Cambodia for the prestige of having the fastest teams over a short course. This is the most extreme sport locally with a high percentage of jockeys and spectators getting injured and having close calls. The teams drag a wooden plow, minus the steel furrough, around a water saturated circuit with the measurement of the champions taken between the yellow flags along the last straight. Winners are measured by the increase or loss in distance between the two competing teams along the straight. The event takes place in a remote village and highlights the simple life of rural farmers.
